Established by immigrants from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and northern Germany, the history of Minneapolis is primarily focused on Antony falls and Fort Snelling. The Franciscan missionary Louis Hennepin visited the region in 1680 and founded St. Anthony Falls, which eventually supplied Fort Snelling, a military garrison at the junction of rivers, with energy to mill flour. On the eastern side of the falls, the village of St. Anthony formed.

Many settlers were attracted to the area not only because of established industries but also the security of the land, which was provided because of the presence of the military fort. The village opposite saint Antony falls kept growing, and when the military left, both of them combined to form a single city. Minneapolis was established in 1856.
