10 Ways to Feed your travel bug AT HOME!

We are all feeling it around the world stuck at home. Maybe vacations are canceled, limited travel abilities, or just practicing social distancing we’re in it together. WE ARE BORED!!! Okay, so yes, for most of us in the US, this is only days 1,2,3,4, or 5, but we need something to do. My international friends, you have been on this journey way longer, and we are here for you too. So I figured I would put together a list of ten things you can do to feed your travel urges from your house.

  2. Watch travel shows. My suggestions on Netflix are “Street Food,” “Stay here,” “Chef’s Table,” and “Restaurants on the edge.” On TV I would say that some Samantha Brown or Anthony Bourdain are the perfect go-tos. 

  3. Make a travel list of all the places you plan to visit once things have settled down. You know…that place you’ve always said you would go but are now realizing life is fleeting, and now is the time to visit. (Now as in once everything has settled down not like right now…put down your suitcase!)

  4. Research your travel list. As eager as you are to get on the plane or in the car, take the time to learn the basics. What do you need, and what is the culture like? Do you need a visa? Do you need your passport? TSA precheck anyone? Weather? Clothes? Customs? Safety measures? Why not prepare that all now so once we are open and healthy you can get right to booking those tickets. 

  5. Make an itinerary. What places are a must go and what areas are no no’s. But remember to leave room for adventure. My number one travel tip is plan time for adventure get lost for the day (safely of course), stop somewhere you would have never known to put on the list. Go back to the place you saw in the cab ride to the hotel. 

  6. Learn the language, while you’re at it. No, I am not telling you to take up French in the next two weeks but learn some basics. I always learn “please,” “thank you,” “bathroom,” “cab,” “where is?” and “Do you speak ____ (your language). Respect the culture and locals as much as possible! It is always a gesture of goodwill when you try to understand the language versus expecting them to know yours. Be a visitor, not a tourist!

  7. Comment on this post. What cities we should go to next. Is it the city on your list or another city? We are not just sticking to the US. :)

  8. Lookup a cultural recipe. Cook from the ingredients you have AT HOME. Please do not go out and get new items unless you need to replenish your food supply. Have fun and try something new or make up something on your own that you imagine has a cultural influence. 

  9. Make a local hit list. Made of places you will visit once we are free to move about the cabin. Use Google to find those restaurants in your neighborhood that you did not know existed or those cool hidden gems down the street you thought was a dead end. Use this as an opportunity to get to know your area better. Support local businesses if possible, buy a gift card to a restaurant or shop you are going to go to in the future. 

  10. Share travel stories. On the phone, in our comments, on our social media, with your friends, and family. You are not alone! Share those crazy out of this world stories. I plan to share a crazy travel story a-day for my Thymers entertainment every day for the next 14 days. 

Be kind to one another. We are all in this together! In case I did not mention it stay home unless you really need to be responsible. You may not be protecting yourself, but you may be giving our nurses, doctors, emergency responder’s a fighting chance to get ahead of this virus for our elderly members of the community and those with compromised immune systems.
